The “Heated Tailgate” Guide to Badgers Basketball (Jan 2026)

Walking down Regent Street in October is a tradition. Walking it in January – when the wind chill off Lake Mendota hits -10°F – is just poor planning.

If you are heading to the Kohl Center for the massive Saturday games against Purdue or Ohio State this winter, you need a strategy that doesn’t involve freezing in a parking ramp line on Dayton Street.

The “Power House” Saturday Games

We are seeing high demand for two specific dates this January. Since both are Saturdays, the pre-game crowds will be massive.

  • Saturday, Jan 3, 2026 (7:00 PM): Badgers vs. Purdue. This is the first big game after the holidays. Expect a “Gold Out” or “White Out” crowd.
  • Saturday, Jan 31, 2026: Badgers vs. Ohio State. Deep winter game. The roads will likely be slick, and surge pricing on rideshare apps will be at its peak.

Pro Tip: If you haven’t already, snag your single-game tickets now. These Saturday matchups are historically the first to sell out.

The “Perfect Night Out” Itinerary

When you book a luxury limo bus or rent a Party bus in madison, you aren’t just paying for a ride; you are buying a seamless itinerary. We can help you connect the dots between the best dinner spots and the show without you ever touching a steering wheel.

Here is the “Entity Stack” we recommend for a perfect Hamilton evening:

1. Pre-Show Dinner

Don’t stress about finding parking near the restaurant and the theater. We can drop you right at the door of Madison’s top dining spots:

  • Rare Steakhouse (14 W Mifflin St)
: Located right on the Capitol Square, this is the ultimate high-end steak dinner. It’s elegant and delicious, but parking on the Square is notoriously difficult. Let us drop you off at the front entrance like a VIP.
  • Heritage Tavern (131 E Mifflin St)
    :
Known for its farm-to-table upscale dishes. A local favorite for “foodies” before a show.
  • Tornado Club Steak House
    :
If you prefer a late dinner after the show, this “old school cool” supper club is the place to be.

2. The Transfer

Once you finish dessert, your Ace Bus chauffeur will be waiting. No rushing to pay the meter. No walking in the cold. We drive you the few blocks from the restaurant to the Overture Center, dropping you off right at the Fairchild Street entrance.

3. The Show

Enjoy the room where it happens! Because you didn’t have to coat-check a heavy parka (you can leave it on our heated bus), you can head straight to your seats or the bar.

The “Bar-to-Bench” Strategy

Parking at the Kohl Center is scarce. The official lots (like Lot 91 or 46) require season permits or sell out instantly.

The smarter move? Park yourself at a bar, let us pick you up at the door, and drop you right at the stadium entrance.

Best Pickup Spots for Your Group

  • Jordan’s Big 10 Pub (1330 Regent St): The legendary spot for pre-game bratwursts. It’s a classic, but parking nearby is a nightmare. Let us scoop you up right from the lot.
  • Lucky’s 1313 Brew Pub (1313 Regent St): A massive space right in the heart of the action. Perfect for large groups to meet before hopping on the bus.
  • The Red Shed (508 State St): Local Note: The Red Shed is no longer on Beak Street; it moved to State Street. It is now a much longer, colder walk to the Kohl Center. A shuttle bus makes this transfer seamless.

The Logistics: Real Reasons to Book a Bus

Beyond just “warmth,” a private charter solves specific security and traffic headaches at the Kohl Center.

1. The 8.5″ x 11″ Bag Rule

The Kohl Center has one of the strictest bag policies in the Big Ten.

  • The Rule: You cannot bring in bags larger than 8.5” x 11”, and backpacks are completely prohibited.
  • The Problem: If you buy a jersey at the bookstore or bring a heavy winter coat, you have to hold it on your lap for 2 hours. There is no coat check for prohibited items.
  • The Fix: Leave your heavy jackets, backpacks, and merch shopping bags securely on the bus. Your driver stays with the vehicle the entire time.

2. The Dayton Street Drop-Off

Rideshare drivers often get confused by the game-day closures around Frances Street. Our drivers know the drill.

  • We utilize the designated drop-off zones on W Dayton Street, directly in front of the arena.
  • You step off the bus, walk through the metal detectors at Gate B or Gate A, and you’re inside. No walking blocks from a parking ramp.

Fleet Spotlight: Choose Your “Tailgate Vehicle”

  • For Alumni & Corporate Groups: 33 Passenger Limo Bus. Leather perimeter seating, tinted windows, and a high-end sound system. It feels like a luxury suite on wheels.
  • For Student Orgs & Large Crews: 81 Passenger School Bus. This is the ultimate “Heated Tailgate” machine. It’s budget-friendly, holds a massive number of people, and keeps the energy high.
  • For Families: 20 Passenger Shuttle Bus. Safe, warm, and comfortable for getting the kids and grandparents to the game without the parking hassle.

FAQs

We aim for the official drop-off zones on West Dayton Street, right in front of the Kohl Center. If Dayton is closed for specific VIP movements, we use the secondary drop-off at Regent St & Breese Terrace, which is still far closer than public parking.

Yes. If everyone is 21+, you can drink on the bus. It is BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage). We provide the coolers and ice. Note: You cannot take drinks off the bus and onto the sidewalk or into the stadium.

The Kohl Center uses walk-through metal detectors at every gate. By leaving your keys, bags, and large metal items (like flasks) on the bus, you fly through security while everyone else is emptying their pockets.

Since this is a Saturday night game immediately following the holidays, availability is extremely tight. We recommend booking 4-6 weeks out.
